Why September is the hardest month for a home

In summer, the home was on holiday together with you. In September, everything moves back in at once: the hallway becomes a transfer station for bags, slippers and sports gear, the kitchen runs three services a day plus packed lunches, and the washing machine chases its backlog from week to week. At the same time, the afternoons end on playgrounds and in sports halls — and precisely the two hours that used to belong to the home vanish from the schedule.

Every family knows the result: a flat that was tidy on Sunday evening looks by Wednesday as if twice as many people lived there. With a guilty conscience thrown in.

The trick is not more cleaning — it is fewer decisions

What drains the most energy is not the work itself — it is deciding when to do what. Three habits that remove the deciding altogether:

1. The evening kitchen reset (10 minutes, every evening)

Always the same, always the last chore of the day: dishes into the machine, worktop and hob wiped, sink empty. Nothing more. A morning that starts in a clean kitchen runs differently — and the dirt never builds up for more than one day.

2. The full-hands rule

Never walk up the stairs or out of a room empty-handed. Every trip is a chance to return something to its place — without a dedicated "tidying-up session" that the timetable never has room for anyway.

3. A station by the door

September carries playground sand, leaves and half the gym into the flat. Stop it at the door: a good doormat, a basket for sports gear and hooks for the bags. Whatever does not spread through the flat never needs cleaning up.

The weekly minimum: five times 15 minutes

Instead of one endless Saturday clean that gets cancelled anyway, five short, fixed slots:

1. Monday — bathroom, quick pass: washbasin, toilet, mirror. No scrubbing, just the basics.
2. Tuesday — the walkways: vacuum the hallway, kitchen and living room — the rooms with the most foot traffic.
3. Wednesday — kitchen, deeper: hob, microwave, cupboard handles.
4. Thursday — dust at eye level: shelves, tables, screens, switches.
5. Friday — mop the floors in the kitchen and hallway. The weekend stays free.

Fifteen minutes is little enough for the slot to survive even the maddest week — and enough to keep the home above water.

What this system leaves out — and why that is fine

Let us be honest: the system above maintains a home, it does not clean it. Windows and blinds, the oven, radiators, the sofa, edges and corners, dust on top of the wardrobes — none of it fits into 15-minute slots, and in September it all gets quietly postponed "to a weekend when there is time". That weekend does not come in October, and not in November either.
